When we set out to remodel our own kitchen, we treated it as more than a home-improvement project. We treated it as a chance to learn firsthand which upgrades actually pay off and what it really takes to do them right.
This is the second part of our series on improvements that earn their keep, and this time the case study is our own home.
The single change that transformed the space was removing a wall. What had been a closed-off kitchen became part of one continuous flow into the dining room and living room. That open layout was what we wanted from the start, and it delivered more than looks: a sense of togetherness that makes the whole house feel more connected for our family.
The project rises or falls on the people you hire. If there is one lesson we would pass to anyone planning a renovation, it is this. Before signing with a general contractor, ask for references, study photos of their completed work, and talk to clients they have worked with. Just as important, ask whether they rely on subcontractors, because most do. We learned this the hard way when electricians showed up at 11 at night, squeezing us in around their day jobs. With school-age children at home, that stretch was genuinely difficult, though we reminded ourselves it was temporary and got through it.
Communication holds everything together. A good general contractor does not just schedule the subcontractors; they supervise the quality of what those crews deliver and catch problems early. We hit a few communication snags along the way, and what kept the project moving was an open, steady line of contact with our contractor, rather than assuming the details would handle themselves.
Spend deliberately on the finishes. Rather than splurge on the highest-end cabinets, we chose a mid-range line and focused on maximizing cabinet space instead, which tends to return far more at resale than premium materials alone. The one indulgence was the backsplash. After some good-natured debate, Katie won out with a herringbone pattern in mixed tones. Trendy or not, it is the detail that makes her smile every time she walks in, and a space you love living in has value all its own.
Looking back, we are thrilled with how the kitchen turned out. It has made day-to-day life in our home more enjoyable, and we are confident it strengthened the home’s long-term value. That is the real test of a smart improvement: it should reward you now and pay you back later.
